Chrysler Repair: power steering/generator belt replacement: LH cars, tensioner pulley, 2000 dodge intrepid

Question
My question is there an short cut to replacing a serpetine belt on a 2000 Dodge
Intrepid?  2.7 liter engine

Answer
Hi Dan,
I am not sure what you mean by the serpentine belt because there are two separate belts on the 2.7L, neither of which qualifies as a serpentine (which usually implies a more extensive path and more components being driven by a single belt). In any case, if you mean the power steering/generator belt then all that requires is that you release the nut on the tensionser pulley shaft, then you can move the adjusting bolt just 'around the corner' so that the belt slackens. Remove and replace the belt, tighten the tension using the adjusting bolt and then lock it in that position by the nut on tensioner pulley shaft.
Let me know if I misunderstand your question. Perhaps you mean the timing belt? If that is the case I don't know any short cuts other than to say you need to follow the shop manual to be sure you do it right the first time. Do you have a good instruction manual for the job? Let me know if not.

Roland you are right I was talking about power steering and alternator belt. I was told that the complete front end of the car had to be taken off, I guess that person was wrong huh? Thanks again for the information, it helps a lot. Dan C.

Thanks for the very kind rating and nomination, Dan. My answer is based upon the 98-9 shop manuals for the LH body cars, so I would believe that your '00 should be no different. There should be space to get to the bolts without removing any other part of the car.
