Chrysler Repair: oxygen sensor: cost for replacement?, oxygen sensors, oxygen sensor

Question
My check engine light is on my 2002 Crysler 300m, V6.  It has never run better over 120K miles and I love the car. Highway driving.  Diagnosis is O2 sensor.  Estimate was over $750 to fix?  The car performs fine MPG is still at same levels as ever @22.5MPG.  I have just decided to keep driving without the repair unless you think I would damage the car.  Any advice?

Answer
Hi Bill,
Was this a dealership that gave you the diagnosis?
There are 4 different oxygen sensors, and there is a fault code for each of them so I would inquire of the shop as to what was the code number and therefore was it the upstream/downstream, left/right sensor that was "coded". The amazing thing to me is the price quote. The sensor itself is under $100 and it is about as difficult to install as a spark plug. Where did they come up with that price!
I think you should be able to get the bad sensor replaced for $150 at most by an independent shop. Let me know the number if it is shown on the work order and also which engine you have in case there is some discrepency between what is appears to be and the actual situation. You can use the "thank and rate" tab to get back to me without have to wait for 'availability'. There is a space for 'comments'.
I would change out the sensor as it will improve your engine's efficiency and reduce its air pollution to the design levels. But I would not have it done at that shop.
