Chrysler Repair: transaxle fluid leak: oil seal replacement or?, dodge grand caravan, seal leaks

Question
1996 Dodge Grand Caravan,3.3 engine. I have a major transmission fluid leak, seems to be comming from between the trasn. and the engine. How do I replace the seal on the trans axle? I assume it is the seal?

Answer
Hi Shane,
Is the leaking fluid definitely trans fluid (instead of engine oil) as that location has the crankshaft rear seal, as well as the torque converter and the transmission, the latter two using trans fluid.
If it is trans fluid for sure, then you have to remove the transmission to access the seals that are involved. I would not try any additives as the transmission itself is very sensitive to the chemicals in which it is bathed so you would not want to run the risk of causing a transmission failure. But perhaps while the transmission is "out" it would be reasonable to service/rebuild as needed the interior parts of the trans.
If you perhaps have too much fluid in the trans, that can also cause it to leak out.
You might also remove the cover on the trans at the torque converter area to inspect the external surface of the torque converter to see if there is a leak in the external weld of that device (a seam on the edge of the donut).  That could be welded were it the source of the leak. Otherwise, drive shaft seal leaks can only be corrected by removal of the trans.
