Chrysler Repair: 98 t & c: radiator cooling fans not working, radiator cooling fans, engine coolant

Question
My 98 town & country is blowing only warm air. I took it t o a mechanic and he filled it with freon and checked the entire system. It is in good working order, but the cooling fans for the condenser are not kicking on. He asid it should be a relay . I can't figure out which relay runs those fans. Could you suggest what I should do next?

Answer
Hi Terry,
The fans at the radiator/condensor are powered by fuse #24 in the power distriution box that is under the hood. If that is OK, then I would suspect that the fan relay is the problem. It is located on the side frame rail of the vehicle on the left side of the engine compartment. You can find it by following the wiring harness at the fan motors back to their source at the relay. That relay is a solid state device in contrast to all the other relays and because of the heat it apparently creates that needs to be dissipated it is mounted externally on that frame rail rather than in the power box. In the time frame of the latter 90's there was an unusually high rate of failure of these relays to the extent that Chrysler did a recall for replacement. You could very possibly get a free repair if this is indeed the case and it is still in effect. The relay is controlled by the engine computer which energizes it whenever either the AC is activated or the engine coolant sensor detects that the engine is going into the 220+F range even without the AC.
But if by chance the relay is not bad, the next "stop" would be the computer. But given the history I would suspect the relay. It is bolted to the frame rail and has a 4-wire plug so that if you can't get it replaced free of charge it is a simple do-it-yourself project.
I would be interested to learn if the recall would cover this or not.
