Chrysler Repair: Neon auto transmission: t/c clutch wont unlock, torque converter clutch, neon auto

Question
Hi. I have a 2000 neon 2.0 l. with 3 speed auto transmission - approx 200,000 km. Lately transmission or more likely the torque converter locks up at highway speed and stays locked up when I'm stopping. It usually unlocks before the engine stalls, but not before it really shudders. If I bump it into neutral before stopping, it unlocks fine. Trans upshifts and works fine otherwise, although there is a whining sound in reverse that never used to be there. Trans fluid level is fine and not burnt. Fluid and filter were changed around 100,000 km. Is there any chance this is an easy fix?
Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Mike,
I am not certain how easy it is to test the torque converter clutch electrical solenoid that is on the valve body, if that might be the cause of your problem, or how much would be involved in replacing it or the clutch itself. You will have to ask at a transmission shop that is familiar with the A-413 Chrysler transmission.
But there is an easy fix: just unplug the solenoid's electrical connector and that will prevent it from being utilized entirely. The result will be a slight reduction in mileage and of course reduced braking above 40 mph, but there are many vehicle with automatic transmissions that don't have this feature. You could do that and then drive it further until something else happens to the transmission that would require a rebuild and fix it then. Be sure to mention at that time about the delayed release of the lock-up clutch. You will find the electrical connector directly behind the dipstick.
