Chrysler Repair: Chrysler cirrus lxi problems:dies unexpectedly, chrysler cirrus lxi, chrysler cirrus

Question
I have a 98 Chrysler cirrus lxi with 109,000 miles on it. It has started to stop while driving for no reason. After googling this problem i find that many many other people are having this same problem. Clearly there is a chrysler wide problem with this car, its easy to see as the symptoms are all the same happening to this car.

My question is , have you heard of any fix to this problem? or from Chrysler that there is a confirmed problem?

Answer
Hi David,
This is not a problem that is confined to Chrysler Cirrus or Chrysler products, but can happen to any engine that has fuel injection with solid-state engine position sensors. Those sensors wear out and begin to do so when they are warm, recover when cool, etc, etc. There are two: a camshaft sensor (located in the distributor if you have the 2.5 V-6, otherwise mounted on the engine timing cover) and a crankshaft sensor. The way to find out which is to go to an Autozone parts store and get a free readout of the engine controller for fault codes which will tell you which one. If you don't have an Autozone nearby then an independent garage will do it for $40 or so.
The fault code numbers are 0340 and 0320 respectively for the two sensors. If you have a V-6 and you get the 0340 then that means a new distributor unfortunately. Much less expensive if it is the 0320 crank sensor. Let me know what numbers you get and we can go from there.
