Chrysler Repair: Clicking Noise while turning left, constant velocity joint boot (cv)

Question
Hi Mr. Finston, I have a 1994 Chrysler Lebaron Convertible with a 3.0 V-6 auto transmission.  The odometer shows 178K miles.  Recently I noticed a "clicking" noise when turning left at an intersection.  The car is under light acceleration.  The noise is becoming more apparent and seems to be evolving to a "light grinding" noise.  The location seems to be on the passenger side front wheel.  Do you have any thoughts as to the cause?
Thanks for your help.
Terry

Answer
Hi Terry,
That has all the earmarks of a constant velocity joint that has run low on grease because its rubber boot has cracked which allows the grease to spin out as the axle shaft spins. It does require a bit of dismantling at the right front wheel which can be done by the home mechanic. You can probably see the torn boot by looking under the car just to the inside of the tire at the end of the axle shaft. Chances are pretty good that if you deal with it promptly you won't need to replace the joint (or more commonly the entire half-axle at a shop) but rather just replace the boot if it just started. I have never had to replace a joint/shaft by giving it attention. If you are or have a mechanic at home let me know and I can send you some pages from the manual that describe the job.
