Chrysler Repair: limp mode: transmission fault code readout, dodge ram 4x4, independent shop

Question
My 1997 1500 dodge ram 4x4 went into limp mode,Im getting no coeds flashing from the engine light. Ive read that if it is a tranny sensor malfunction it wont flash a code it would need to be scanned my a high dollar scanner. What should my first step in fixing this be?

Answer
Hi Stacey,
I would get a code readout using the 16-pin plug that is under the dash by the steering column. It is correct that the check engine light will not give you codes from the transmission computer. An Autozone parts store will often do this readout for free, or an independent shop will charge around $40. Get the 4-digit fault code numbers, ask what they mean, what they recommend and how much? Then write back with the results and we'll go from there.
