Chrysler Repair: 95 Lebaron: starter motor intermittently not working, neutral safety switch, using a voltmeter

Question
Sometimes my car starts and sometimes it takes a long time before it does....Sounds like it wants to....the starter motor and ignition switch  has been replaced.....But, I still have the same problem.....The mechanic can't seem to figure it out.....One mechanic said it may be something going on with the transmission or the battery.....another said it's not.........Help!.........

Answer
Hi Tina,
After replacing the ignition switch and starter and assuming the battery is charged and still delivering current (how old compared to is warranty?), the remaining items are the starter motor relay and the park/neutral safety switch. The next time the motor doesn't work try:
1. move the transmission selector slightly off the central detent position in both Park and Neutral positions to test if the linkage may be slightly out of adjustment
2. open the hood, open the power distribution box that is in front of the driver's side strut tower and then have a helper try the start while you listen to hear a soft click coming from the starter relay which is the little square box that it at the end position closest to the fender. If you get the click, then the safety switch is OK, if not, then the safety switch or the relay is bad. If you get the click, the relay could still be bad due to burned contact points inside (either that or the wire from the relay to the starter is loose). That could only be told by using a voltmeter to test for it.
Other than those, the wiring connecting the battery's + post to the starter motor, or the wires from the - post that go to the body and the engine could be loose or corroded. Those are all the possibilities.
If you can find out whether the relay clicks or not, and try the shift lever, let me know what you find and I can tell you how to do the electrical testing.
