Chrysler Repair: 82 2.2L no start, chrysler lebaron, diagnostic capability

Question
well i have a 82 chrysler lebaron with a 2.2 motor i was driving down the road today and i didnt let the car warm up and like usual when i put hte pettle down it bogged out cause it was cold i drove about 3 miles down the road the gas to keep up with traffic it bogged down so i let up a little and it started go a little better i got to abot 35 mph and then it just completely bogged out and it wont start at all it turns over but doesnt even give an effort to start i thought mabye it was flooded but it wasnt even trying to start just cranking over so im thinking mabye the fuel pump went out and my dad thinks maybe the timing belt slipped and i was just wondering if mabye you might know what could have caused it. it had been sitting for a while before we got it and i got a new rotor plug wire plugs oil change and filter and so i dont know exactly why its acting this way but any info would be great.
thank you

Answer
Hi Darren,
Sorry for the delay, I hadn't been following the "pool" questions.
These early fuel injected (I assume this is a fuel-injected engine) do have self-diagnostic capability but I don't believe you can get it with your ignition switch. Give it a try:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light to see (it remains "on") if it starts to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the count. If you don't get any flashing at all then I am correct about the need to get a code reader plugged into the 6-pin plug in the engine compartment, usually in front of the left strut tower. Try and see what 2-digit codes numbers come out. These will help to diagnose the problem. You can check for spark when you are cranking, which would be of diagnostic help. I would conjecture that the hall effect position sensor in the distributor has gone bad (no spark if that were the case) or the MAP sensor is off-value. But getting a code will be very helpful.
