Chrysler Repair: 2002 sebring torque converter, manual roland, torque converter

Question
I have a 02 sebring with the 2.7 and an auto tranny. Recently I was driving and it made a whinning noise and the tranny felt like it was in neutral. I took it to a little garage nearby. They took it for a ride and said it drove fine. Ten minutes later I was on the freeway and it did it again. One shop said the tranny was toast when another said it was only a bad torque converter. Would the torque converter cause this problem?

Answer
Hi Larry,
You would ideally be able to hear the noise coming from the torque converter when the car was in neutral and at rest. If not, then I would have a code readout of the transcontroller done to see what fault codes are stored, if any. That can be done for free at an Autozone parts store or at a lower cost at an independent trand shop. Get the code numbers, ask what they mean, what they recommend, and how much. Then write back with the results and we'll compare that to the manual.
