Chrysler Repair: high rpms, vacuum leak, transmission controller

Question
Hi, I just noticed my rpms are staying between 2 and 3 rpms when I am only going 35 mph.  The engine sounds loud.  Even when i stop it still stays at 1.5 rpms.  What could cause this.  I have regular oil changes and other regular maintenance.  What could cause this?

Answer
Hi Theresa,
I just found your question in the "pool". It sounds to me like the high rpm's when you are driving is due to the transmission not shifting into higher gears. There is probably a fault code stored in the transmission controller which you can find out by going to an Autozone parts store and asking them to readout the controller memory for free, or if that isn't available go to an independent shop and they will read it out for around $40. Find out the fault code numbers, what they mean, what should be done, and how much. Then write back and tell me the results. On the high rpm's at a stop, that sounds like a vacuum leak or a sticking throttle valve.
If you write back tell me the year, model, engine, and body style.
