Chrysler Repair: 96 sebring wont shift, alternator problem, speed sensors

Question
I have a 1996 Sebring and we just got done changing the alternator, well when we got done the thing wont shift! Ive checked both the speed sensors ( input and out put) and they look ok. i would appreciate any and all input on this cause it is my daughters car and she has late night classes and i don't want her walking home. oh yea also i recently had to have her drive it home with just the battery power cause of the alternator problem, could of this caused any problem with the tranny or some other sensor or something?  Thanks Experts!

Answer
Hi James,
Driving in one gear only (2nd gear) is a fallback condition of the transmission when it senses some sort of a problem which if allowed to use all gears may cause unnecessary damage. It is called limp-in mode. It also means that a fault code that describes the problem has been stored in the memory of the transmission controller. You can get a readout of the code by means of a reader that plugs into a socket under the dash. An Autozone parts store will do a readout for free or an independent shop will do it for around $40. Ask the code number(s), what they mean, what they recommend, and how much? Then write back and we'll compare that to the manual.
Sorry to be answering so late but I didn't see the question in the 'pool' until recently.
