Chrysler Repair: 3.3/3.8L oil leak on rear of oil pan, pan gasket, alond

Question
I just got one of these vans, it has 127K on it, I have oil leaking down the back of the oil pan, what is the most common problem with this, the oil pan gasket or the rear main seal. if the seal does the tranny have to come out to change it.

Answer
Hi Gary,
I can't give you any stats on pan gasket vs crank oil seal as the cause. The tranny would have to come out to replace the seal. If you end up replacing the seal, use care in removing the old one to not scratch the crank surface with the pry tool. You can pry against the edge of the crank, but smooth it before inserting new seal. There is a Miller set of tools to install the new seal: 6926-1 and 6926-2 alond with handle C-4171. All these apply to the 3.3/3.8L engine. You could try tightening the pan bolts to 9 foot-pounds to see if that reduces the leak.
