Chrysler Repair: 2000 Chrysler 300m starter issue, 2000 chrysler 300m, chrysler 300m

Question
In the past week I have had two experiences where I turn the key in ignition and all the lights on the dash flash on and off in unison with a clicking noise which I assume is the solenoid or the starter relay kicking in.  I repeat this a few times and then finally the starter engages and the car starts up.  Once it starts everything is fine.  Do you know whats causing this?  Is my starter going or is it the solenoid or the relay?  How much does each part cost on average to have a repair shop replace it and do you recommend a refurbished starter versus a new starter if it comes to that?  Thanks!!

Answer
Hi Tony,
My suspicion is that you have a weak battery as when the starter motor engages it draws large amounts of current. When a compromised battery is asked to deliver so much current its voltage drops to point where the lights go out and solenoid releases the switch, which then cuts the current drain, the voltage rises quickly, only to be drawn down again, etc., etc., and thus the oscillations.
I would not change any parts until you consider the age of the battery and its ability to be charged to an acceptable level of storage. If it is near the end of its warranty I would just replace it. Once you have assured you have a fully charged battery, if the behavior continues then I would look at other parts of the starter system, probably beginning with the starter motor.
