Chrysler Repair: Transmission.no reverse., chrysler drb, independent shop

Question
QUESTION: How can I repair this problem.??I know that its electronically controlled, can u advise me Please.i

ANSWER: It is difficult to answer this question without knowing the specific year and model of the vehicle. But in general the only common cause for a reverse 'no go only' is either an internal mechanical problem OR the hydrualic fluid pressure is not high enough because of an ineffective internal fluid pump. The mechanical problem requires trans removal and repair, while the flud pump would only requre pan removal to get to the pump for replacement. I would recommend that you have the memory of the transmission controller readout for any fault codes which would tell you what is specifically wrong using a diagnostic readout box. If the vehicle is '96 or later you can often get a free readout at an Autozone parts store, or lacking that a lower cost readout at an independent shop. Find out the fault code number(s), ask what they mean, what they say you should do, and how much? Then let me know and we can compare that to the manuals. For '95 and older you will have to get a readout at a dealer. Same info is needed, and tell me which year and vehicle you have if you write back.

QUESTION: Sorry Roland.To anxious to find out.--=Transmission.(No reverser)it's a 1994 Town & Country Van,with A604 Trany.Computer control.(ECM).

Answer
Hi Tony,
As I responded, you will need to get a readout via the data link connector (near the left strut tower) using a Chrysler DRB II reader or equivalent. A dealer will have it, or a well-equipped independent shop. Be sure their reader will measure the trans controller, as there is also an engine controller, and the unit has to do separate readouts of the two.
The only other item to check would be that the fluid level in the trans is up to, but not above the full mark. Use only ATF +3 or +4 fluid, never use Dexron type. Let me know what fault codes come from the readout, which should be 2-digit numbers.
