Chrysler Repair: 2001 chrysler sebring lxi transmission, 4 digit numbers, chrysler sebring

Question
i have a 2001 sebring lxi with the 3.0liter and auto stick transmission. i was driving it the other day and the trans started acting like it was slipping. i parked it for about 10 minutes and when i went to drive away it had nothing, no drive or reverse. the fluid smells fine and there is no fluid leek, but no matter what i do it just wont move. can a trans that has given me no problems at all go bad in that short amount of time, without the typical burnt smell or discolored fluid? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Answer
Hi Jeff,
If could be a fault for example with the internal fluid pump not producing the pressures necessary to operate the clutches. If you can get it to an Autozone parts store you can get a free fault code readout, or to an independent shop for about $40. That is probably the most efficient way to find out what might be wrong.
If that is not practical try turning the ignition key 'on-off-on-off-on and leave on' doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the odometer window to see if it changes to show any 4-digit numbers which would be the fault codes. The last way to try to do a self-readout is to hold the trip odometer reset button "in" then turn the key to the 'run' position, and that may cause the odometer window to show the fault codes. Let me know what they are.
