Chrysler Repair: GAS: pump shuts off when trying to fill tank, diameter hose, incoming gas

Question
I CAN'T PUT GAS IN MY TANK. IT KEEPS CLICKING OFF

Answer
Hi Donald
I suspect that there is a pinched hose/tube which runs along the outer surface of the gas tank filler pipe (the connection between where you insert the hose and the tank proper). That small diameter hose/tube is a "return" line to allow the air that is in the tank that is displaced by the incoming gas to recycle and thus prevent the inadvertant pressurization of the tank. The gas pump senses this pressure when it is not relieved and 'believes' therefor that your tank is filled up to the top of the filler neck and so it shut off the in-flow of fuel.
You should be able to examine the return tube by looking from under the car at the connection between the filler opening and the tank to see that tube/hose and examine its condition. If it has clamps you could loosen them and remove the tube/hose and see if it might be clogged and whether the connections to which it is clamped could be clogged.
