Chrysler Repair: 1999 LHS overheating, degree range, intake manifold

Question
Hello Kevin,
I have a 1999 LHS with a 3.5 liter engine that according to the gauge has sporadically been running in the 3/4 range (just a little under the hot) of the gauge as opposed to the middle where it normally runs. It doesn't seem to be dependent on the outside temperature, it has been in the 30-40 degree range the last month. At first I thought it was probably the thermostat, but I am hesitant to change it since it appears that it will require removing the intake manifold. Also, if the thermostat was stuck, I don't think it would come up to operating temperature normally like it does. As, I mentioned, this problem isn't consistent- At times it will run for many miles in the normal range and then it will start climbing almost to hot within a few miles. The fluid level is ok.
Thanks,
Duane

Answer
Hi Duane,
It may be normal for this sort of reading range and variation. If the fans are coming on then that is probably why the temp drops down again. If you aren't loosing coolant and there are no bubbling sounds that would suggest air in the system I would not be concerned. You might want to chect the fins on your radiator for leaves/dirt that may be blocking some of the flow of air. The thermostat can be changed without removing the intake manifold, if necessary.
