Question
I am haveing trouble with this car, when my wife got it i changed the plugs and wires. I had it checked with the skanner and a miss fire came up of number 3,that one is under the intake. Well i checked the wire and the plug and they were fine. Now the check engine lite will not go away, and no codes are comeing up and we tryed to reset the light and still there. And there is no shake or nothing to indacate a miss fire. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

Answer
If the check engine light is on, there has to be a code of some sort. I believe that in '96 you can get a limited readout of the codes using the ignition key::"On-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less. Then watch the check engine light, which remains "on", to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, then repeat the readout to assure an accurate set of counts. The last two sets of flashes will be 5 in each. If you combine the numbers in pairs in the order of appearance you will have any 2-digit fault codes. The last will always be 55 because it is the code for 'end of readout'. You can then either write back with the codes, or go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a list of codes. Otherwise if you have an Autozone parts store nearby they will often do a code readout for free. It is possible that there is a short in the cluster if everything seems OK and yet the light remain "on" but that is not very likely.
