my daughters car has all the gears lit up ,d-r-p-3-2-n  on the shift indicator,when this happens the car feels like it will not go out of third gear and the speed odometer does not move at all.every so often the lights will go out  and the speed odometer works then but the car feels like it changes gears but then all of a sudden it will drop gears and almost put you through the wind shield,fluid level is ok,help

These sort of things happen when one of the sensors that measures the speed of vehicle that is mounted on the transmission is failing. But it could also be a problem with the communication of the data between the engine and the transmission that is at fault. The best way to find out is to readout the memory of the computers for the engine/transmission powertrain for the presence of any fault codes that would give an indication of the problem. If there is an Autozone parts store near you they will often do such a readout for free. Or you can check the independent garages in your area for a "special" on a code readout that should be in the range of $40.
Find out the fault code numbers (P followed by 4-digits), what they say they means, what is the proposed repair, and how much. Then write back and we can compare what you were told with what the shop manuals say these mean.
