Chrysler Repair: Major issue with a 2001 Chrysler Town and Country Minivan Air Conditioner, chrysler town and country minivan, chrysler town and country

Question
Good day,
My wife's 2001 Chrysler T/C Minivan experienced a major malfunction the other day. When we pressed the "on" button for the air conditioner, the van immediately began to drive poorly, and smoke started pouring out from the hood.  After pulling over and investigating, it was discovered the problem only occurs when the AC is on.  It had been working fine until then (at least in regards to using the heater).  When the AC is "off", it van works fine.  In repeat testing, the issue reoccurs in any and all possible AC settings once it is turned on, and the smoke seems to come from the serpentine belt rubbing against the pully of the AC, which appears to lock up when the AC is on(can't confirm).
Having never repaired an AC unit in a van before, could you a)steer me toward an overview of the AC configuration, b) is this something a novice could do if the main unit requires replacement, and c)what would the estimated cost for home repair (if possible) and professional repair run.  Thank you!!

Answer
I would say the compressor is locked up. There could also be a leak that caused all the oil to drain out and lock it up.
I would get a manual for what U want to do to see if U want to do this or not. As for price  call around your area because what I say does not mean anything until I look at it and make an assessment.
