Question
had an tranny put in the car and get it home  and drives it about 40-50 miles and it decided it wanted too completely stop moving .would not go forward or backward.can you help me please.ava

Answer
Hi Ava,
I am afraid that if the trans won't move the car, then it will have to be towed to the shop that put it in the car for them to make good on the job. About the only other reason for it behaving this way is a lack of transmission fluid. There is a separate dipstick on the transmission proper, so pull that out and see if the level is visible and near the "full" mark. If it is low, then add only ATF +3 or +4 type fluid to bring it up to the full mark. Don't overfill it and don't ever use Dexron type fluid.
If I misunderstand the history of the problem let me know. You said "tranny put in" and I assume that was done recently. Whoever did it should repair it under warranty if there was one.
If it was a unit from a wrecking yard then there may be no warranty, although you might be offered another unit from the yard.
Driving only at 45-50 probably means that the unit has recognized it has a problem, and when that happens it only will use 2nd gear as a precaution against further damage. It is called 'limp-in' mode. But now you appear to be in a 'non-move' mode.
