Chrysler Repair: Transmission: Dakota 93, trans shop, dodge dakota

Question
i have a 1993 dodge dakota it does not want to shift out of first i know the trans leaks but i do check the fluid leval every day and i also just put a conditioner/sealer into it so why when going down the road does this not shift and the RPM's go way up

Answer
I don't have any manuals about trucks, but if you have an electronic transaxle then I suspect that the trans has gone into limp-in mode. That is actually a lock up in 2nd gear. There should be a data link connector, a blue plug under the dash near the steering column, into which a Chrysler Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB II) can be plugged and then readout for fault codes which are 2 digit numbers. If an independent trans shop can't do the readout, then you have to go to a dealer. Get the code numbers and write back for an analsis to compare what the shop says is wrong to what the manual says for this type of transmission, if that is indeed what you have there.
