Chrysler Repair: 1992 Chrysler Acclaim check gauge light, check gauge, engine controller

Question
When I step on my brakes on my 1992 Chrysler Acclaim the check gauge light comes on and then when I restarted my car the check engine light came on. Why is this? thanks!

Answer
The check gauge light is non-specific but when it comes on you should look at the various gauges on the dash to see if one of them is showing an inappropriate reading and then investigate that system.
The check engine light coming on means that a fault in the function of the engine has been detected and a code number has been recorded in the memory of the engine controller. You can get that number from the memory using your ignition key:"On-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. The Check engine light will remain "on", then begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the read out to assure an accurate flash count. Then group the counts in pairs in the order of appearance. The last two sets of flashes will always be 5 in each, e.g. the number 55, which is the code for "end of readout".
Then either write back with a follow-up question to tell me the other code numbers or go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a code listing. Then we can go from there.
Because the light came on when you stepped on the brake, I suspect that the issue may be related to the cruise control function, which would be a code 15 or 34. So see if that is the case.
