Chrysler Repair: 1991 Jeep Cherokee Alarm/Remote System, jeep cherokee, jeep dealer

Question
Hi, I have 2 questions:
1)  I have a Limited Edition fully loaded but when I bought the car they didn't have the remote with it.  Can I get a new remote for my Jeep?
2)  If not, how do I permamently disable the alarm system?

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,   Jerry

Answer
Hi Jerry,
You probably didn't notice but in my "statement" I disclaim specific expertise about Jeep vehicles, concentrating instead about the Chrysler brand. However I suspect that they are similar as to the theft/security system, but keep in mind my limitations.
In the early 90's the theft system was a separate unit as was the remote entry unit, and both were located on a bracket located above the glove box. You remove the glove box to access these units.
So if your vehicle came equipped with the remote feature (not required to be so-equipped, ask the original/previous owner or look for a separate module as described above) it should have the module.
To activate a new remote control you had to turn the ignition switch to the "run" position and then ground (any shiny metal surface) a pigtail wire on the module. Then touch any button on the new remote which will enter that remote into the module's memory. Then remove the ground and turn off the ignition. The door locks would lock and unlock automatically as sign of recognition.
The early 90's theft module could be disabled, but the trick here is to only do so with the engine RUNNING. Otherwise, you get into a theft lock out situation where you can't start the engine without the intervention of the dealer with a diagnostic reader box. So as long as the engine is running you can disable the entire system by simply unplugging the theft module while the engine is running.
You can check with a long-standing Jeep dealer to see if what I have described is correct and whether you can get a remote provided you have the remote module present, verify where the modules are, look for them, write me back for corroboration about the plugs (color of plug/number of pins) and then do what you wish.
