Chrysler Repair: How often to tune up?, tune ups, independent shop

Question
My 2002 Intrepid ES is a 3.3L how often tune up?

I change the oil regularly.

The engine light comes on but nothing seems to be wrong then eventually it goes off. Sometimes longer than at other times???

Do I have to take to mechanic everytime it comes on regardless if the car seems to be working just fine?

Thanks very much!

Answer
Hi Ree,
Tune-ups are a thing of the past for modern engines (say post-1994). The spark plugs only need to be changed every 100,000 miles, and the fuel system requires no routine maintenance other than changing the air intake filter and the PCV valve which you can do yourself.
One important item to inspect at 100,000 miles on your 3.2L engine is the timing belt, and keep an eye on it thereafter so you catch it before it breaks which can do major damage.
There is a removable cover on the front of the engine that allow for an easy inspection.
On the check engine light, I would get a free fault code readout at Autozone, or a lower cost (~$40) at an independent shop. Find out what the code numbers are and what they mean, then write back for suggestions on what to do if anything. Chances are it is something simple.
