Chrysler Repair: Chrysler Sebring 1997: stall/restart problem, chrysler sebring, cable clamp

Question
my daughters car has started doing something that no one seems to be able to fix.   she will be driving just fine and come to a stop light and the car will stall.  if she puts it into park it will not start right away, but if she puts it into n it starts up/

Answer
Hi Debbie,
I am not sure if you mean by "start": just the action of the starter motor or that PLUS the actual "catch" of the engine and sustained running? If you mean the former, that the starter motor doesn't respond immediately in Park, then that would be a problem related to a slight adjustment in the cable that connects the gear shift lever to the transmission. If the latter, then I too would be at a loss because there is no real difference between park and neutral relative to sustained running of the engine. Park differs from neutral only as regards the mechanical drive wheel lock-up action. So if the former is the issue (the starter motor won't crank the engine) then a slight adjustment of the cable clamp at the transmission will solve it.
Probably of more importance is reason it is dying when coming to a stop. Does it seem to die suddenly, or does it lug the engine rpm down to lower and lower speeds just as if you had a clutch=type manual transmission and forgot to put in the clutch pedal? Let me know and I can suggest what to do to alleviate the stalling altogether.
