Chrysler Repair: 92 LeBaron J-body LX:electronic cluster illum flaky, soldering pencil, mechanical cluster

Question
The Instrument panel might light up normally one day and not at all the next.  Everything else seams to be in working order.  I’ve checked and replaced the #8 fuse.  Problem stays the same.  I've taken apart the instrument panel and checked for a loose wire. (The instrument panel is an LED type) Problem stays the same.  Is there a second fuse or relay or something I can check before ordering a new instrument panel?  Can I replace the instrument panel with an analog type? Thank You very much!

Answer
Hi Ryan,
By "light up" I assume you mean the lights that are variable intensity only and that other things work.
If the cluster illumination is the only dimmable instrument panel lights that seems flaky, then the problem has to be in the cluster itself or the orange wire on pin 1 of the red plug that comes from a multiwire splice that supplies it and all the other panel lights that are dimmable, or the ground wire for the cluster (but that would probably take out everything if it was open). So find the multi orange wire splice and see if that is your problem, or the orange wire itself or the solder joint between pin 1 of the red socket and the circuit board. You may just need to reheat the solder with a soldering pencil to get a good connection.
Changing over to a mechanical cluster would be a lot of new wiring and also an issue with the body computer because there was a different computer depending upon the type of cluster.
So, I suspect either the splice or the circuit board solder joint, or maybe a break in the the trace on the circuit board. I doubt you will need a new board just to get the illumination back. Let me know if I have misinterpreted the problem.
