Chrysler Repair: Plymouth voyager 1997 3.8 engine wont run, fuel guage, temperature guage

Question
QUESTION: Hi Rowland. When I turn on ignition I get alarmset light on which then goes out. The abs light stays on.there are no green lights showing mileage neither the green lights showing park reverse drive etc. the fuel guage is not functioning neither is the rev counter or temperature guage. When I crank the engine it starts but cuts out immediately.
I have had this trouble before, but if I lock up and leave it for some hours, and then start it, runs ok with all lights and instrument working normal. This time the car has been locked up for twelve hours and for the past four days it has not worked.

ANSWER: Hi David,
The problem involves the theft security system which is treating you like it would if you were a thief. The door locks have a switch connected by wire to the body controller which is the heart of the system. If there is a break in the wire or a switch failure then the system will not disarm properly. I would try two approaches:
Try entering the vehicle using the passenger side door lock to see if that will clear the armed status so the system will let you run it normally.
Open the hood, then use the key to unlock the tailgate lock. That may accomplish the same thing.
Once you get it cleared you can avoid this in the future by never using the security system. Always lock the van by using the manual pushbuttons on the doors. Never use the power door locks, the door key, or the remote key system to secure the van and then it will behave as if it didn't have this system.
To find out what exactly is wrong you need a diagnostic readout box and a manual that is applicable to troubleshooting the system. A dealer is likely to have such capability.
Please let me know how this works out.

QUESTION: Hi Rowland. Thanks for a quick reply. I tried both your suggestions.,but the problem still exists. when I tried the passenger side lock with the key it remotely opened the other doors. Should I lock it back up with the key or remote.

What Next?  Your help is much appreciate. Thank you. A frustrated David. PS How can I lock the tail gate without a key?

Answer
Hi David,
I would keep trying to clear it using either the passenger or the driver door via the key to get into the van. Only lock the door using the manual pushbuttons, nothing else. You have to get the body controller to recognize a disarm order. And then never arm it until the problem is found; so never lock it with a key, a power door lock switch, or a remote. You might try disconnecting fuse 28, that is in the power box under the hood, for a few hours. And then put the fuse in and try to start it. It might work.
If you don't have a key for the tailgate, then that approach will not work.
