Chrysler Repair: 2000 Sebring 2.5L: code p1391, fuel air mixture, mixture problem

Question
it does'nt want to start have to pump the gas to keep it running it won't stay running by itself. exhaust pipe turns cherry red you can turn car off and let it cool off until it stops glowing then you can crank it up and it runs perfect until it cools off then its start all over again. pulls code p1391( cam sensor or crank sensor) done both and didn't change anything

Answer
Hi Kim,
That code says the problem with the sensor is Intermittent and the focus of troubleshooting it is the wiring harness looking for a damaged wire or insulation. Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a minute so as to erase the code, and still does it come back? It may be a stale code so do that. You will set a code 1684 (battery disconnect) but ignore that one, of course.
The way you describe the functioning makes be believe that you also may have a fuel/air mixture problem, but I would think you would get a code for that. Or the glowing pipe may be reflective of the intermittent crank or cam sensor because I suspect that could throw off the spark timing and thus poorly timed spark and the resulting glowing. So my suggestion would be to inspect the harnesses to the two sensors as far at you can trace them, and then try shaking the harnesses while the engine is running to see if you can force a change in the way the engine runs and thus reveal the source of the intermittency. Ultimately, you may have to go to a tune-up shop with a scope so as to better find the source of the intermittency, but try the things I suggested above.
Please let me know what you learn.
