Chrysler Repair: 95 Dodge Stratus, repair estimates, dodge stratus

My 95 Stratus, 6 cyl./auto, seems to shift fine, but it will suddenly downshift to a lower gear..then will downshift again. It feels like you are slamming on the brakes! Any ideas?

Hi Steve,
The trans controller has recognized a fault in the operation of the trans. It only allows the car to run in 2nd gear, to prevent damage. You need to get a readout via the data link connector under the dash near the steering column to find out the 4-digit fault code(s). An Autozone parts store will ofter do that for free, or an independent shop will do if for less than a dealer (~$40). When you have the numbers write back and we'll compare what you are told they mean and any cost repair estimates you might get.
