Chrysler Repair: License Plate Lamp: Cirrus, rear quarter panel, wire colors

Question
I recently purchased a 1998 Cirrus and while having it inspected found the License plate light was out so replaced the bulb but still will not work. We found what appears to be a plug in the inside left rear fender area but it is not plugged into anything. Is it possible this is the problem and if so where does it plug into? We have looked and can not find a spot for it. Than you for any help you can give.

Answer
Hi Delores,
Unfortunately the Chrysler shop manual I have doesn't show exactly where its mate is located other than the 'left rear quarter panel' which is where you found it. The wire colors are black which is the ground wire that is ultimately attached to the body metalwork, and black/yellow which carries the 12V for the light. If you look around the surface of the left tail/stop light assembly, however, you may find a socket for it there as the wiring diagram shows that the two wires somehow get inside that assembly where they are spliced into the same color wires inside the assembly. If you don't find such a socket what you could do is find those two wires on pin 2 and pin 4 of the 6-pin disconnect plug/socket that supplies that assembly and simply solder/splice the wires from your free plug to those same colored wires. But look closely around the assembly for some sort of a socket on its surface or some wires coming out of it, other than the ones that go to the  6-pin disconnect. The same wire that carries voltage to the tail light is carrying it to the license light, so there is nothing complicated about working around this problem. The other thing you might do is find another Cirrus and ask the owner to let you look inside at his wiring setup.
