Chrysler Repair: Front end vibration/shimmy, lower ball joints, control arm bushings

Question
Roland

I have a 1996 Chrysler Sebring JXI convertible with 2.5 V6 and auto trans. At speeds of 65 - steering wheel shakes violently and at 75 mph the shimmy moves to the left side floorboard. I have changed both complete axle shafts, all three engine mounts (two rears were broken and weld on front was popped), front struts, both tie rod ends, and had the wheels and tires checked for runout. Tires and wheels are new with less than 3000 miles on them. I'm at a loss on this one. Any help would be appreciated. Car is on second engine and transmission with 160K on the body.

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Tony,
I would look at the lower control arm bushings, lower ball joints, wheel bearings. There are tests for the amount of free play in those parts. But perhaps a visit to a front end shop would identify the problem. Let me know if you want the pages from the manual that mention tests which for some require a dial indicator.  I can copy by xerox (10 cents a side) and postal mail them to you.
Good luck on this problem.
