Chrysler Repair: Engine knock on acceleration: 99 Breeze, plymouth breeze, independent garage

Question
I have a Manual 1999 Plymouth Breeze with 94K miles on it.  When I accelerate before shifting (at about 2200 rpm) the engine starts making a knocking noise; this continues with every gear until 5th when it stops.  Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Tracee,
You didn't mention which engine you have but there is on the 2.0 and 2.4L engines a knock sensor which if operating properly will retard the spark timing enough as to eliminate the knock. It is mounted on the side of the engine block just in front of the starter motor. It has a single wire (black/light green), so it may need replacement. Check the wire though, first. If you don't have either of those engines then that is not applicable.
A higher grade of gasoline may help, and if that doesn't correct it I would get a fault code readout to see if the engine controller has noticed anything that is wrong. An Autozone parts store will often do that for free, or for $40 at an independent garage. There are several possible causes but start with the fault codes.
