Chrysler Repair: Service engine soon light, code translation, accurate counts

Question
I have a 1996 Sebring convertible, and the service engine soon light just came on while I was driving to the store.I was wondering if you could tell me what the possible causes of this are.....

Answer
Hi Misty,
It means that a fault in the engine performance that would affect emissions has a been noticed by the computer and stored a fault code in its memory. You can use your ignition key to get the code to readout: turn the key "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then the light will stay on, but soon begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat the process so as to verify you have the accurate counts. Then group the counts in pairs in the order of appearance to form the two digit fault code. There will always be two groups of 5 flashes each which is the number 55 which means end of readout. But the number(s) before that are the fault codes. Go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a code translation or write me back and tell me codes for interpretation of what to do.
