Chrysler Repair: 92 T & C: transmission wont shift out of 2nd, inner fender, dead insects

Question
3.3L, transmission may run fine, then downshift at any time or may not even
upshift from the start.  Only does it when hot outside and if you shut off the car
and restart, it may run fine.  Where is the tranny computer on the firewall?

thank you, doug

Answer
Hi Doug,
It appears the your trans is defaulting to "limp in mode" which it does when a fault which may result in damage is detected. This mode reduces the possibility of further damage by limiting the function to 2nd gear. I would begin by checking the fluid level and adding only Chrysler brand trans fluid from the dealer if needed. Also check the face of the radiator/transcooler to make sure it doesn't have alot of dead insects/dirt that is reducing the airflow and causing a too hot operation of the transmission. Finally you can get a fault code readout via a blue data link connector plug under the dash near the steering column using a Chrysler DRB II or equivalent readout box with matching socket. The fault code would be the most useful thing to know to determine what to do to remedy the situation. Get both the two digit fault code number and its name, ask what that would mean as to repair and how much the cost would be? Then write back and we can compare that with the shop manual as to the fault code.
The trans computer maybe either on the firewall OR on the right side (passenger side) inner fender, near the front of the engine compartment. If it is on the firewall it is at the top edge just to the right of midline. In my '93 manual it is shown diagramatically at the location on the firewall, but the wiring diagrams describe it to be on the right inner fender. Let me know where you find it, please.  It has a 60-pin plug.
