Chrysler Repair: 1996 T & C steering gear installation, power steering rack, splined shaft

Question
I am replacing the power steering rack & pinion on my 1996 Town & Country - very difficult to get out - but now I have not been able to push the splined shaft back into the swiveling U-Joint on the steering column.  There is no split in the u-joint component, I used precision caliper to check diameter of the replacement unit and it is the same as the original.  I have tried to hold the u-joint while pushing the spline shaft upward - no luck.  I have devised a method to use a long all thread bolt to slowly pull the splined shaft into the u-joint with more force than my hands and arms and it seems to work up to a point then the u-joint swivels no matter how I try to hold or clamp the joint in place.  I am at a loss.  Please advise me as to what approach I should use or a tool that I need.  Desperate to get this thing back on the road as I really need the transport.  I am not a novice but this has me stumped.
Thanks for your time and assistance.

Answer
Hi Charles,
It is a long and complex procedure shown for replacing, in the '95 manual that I have. One suggestion would be to have someone hold the steering wheel firmly to reduce the tendency for the u-joint to move. My best suggestion would be to send the pages from the shop manual to you. I will xerox and postal mail them to you this afternoon from California and they might arrive by Saturday. Just use the thank and rate tab to enter your postal mailing address. Also tell me if you have the front drive or the 4 wheel drive as they are different instructions.
