Chrysler Repair: Transmission Diagnostics: Chrysler Concorde, chrysler concorde, franchise type

Question
A mechanic ran the diagnostics on my Concorde when the engine light came on.  It said P0700, transmission control system malfunction.  Probable cause, wiring, TCM.  He said I should take it to a dealer since their equipment is better than his.  Never had a problem with the transmission prior to that.

Going home, it felt like the car was in 2nd gear (automatic transmission)and that engine was revving up as I drove.

Answer
Hi Jon,
That code is telling you something that you already know because of the transmission refusing to shift into 3rd or 4th gear, and the engine light is on too. That is called limp-in mode and it is designed to avoid damage to the internals of the transmission. The trick now is that there a second specific code stored in the memory of the transmission controller. I am not certain why the second code didn't also readout but it may be the reader or how you got the codes was such as to not give it to you. You might go to an Autozone parts store and ask for a free readout using the 16-pin plug under the dash and a reader. Or call around to independent shops (not franchise type) to see how much they charge for a readout. A dealer will charge twice as much (around $80) while a independent might
charge $40. When you get the second code, write back and tell me what the shop said is wrong, how much it will cost, and also the specific code number. Then we can compare that to the shop manuals I have.
Have you checked the level of the transmission fluid? If you find it too low only use ATF type 4 and idealy get it from a dealer. Very important not to use the wrong type fluid.
