Answer
Hi Bo,
The gear box has recognized a problem of some sort that might if not repaired cause unnecessary damage, so it has gone into "limp-in" mode which is not driving other than in 1st or 2nd gear to minimize use of many parts of the unit. The best thing to do is use a code reader to find out whether the fault code number is stored in the memory of the control unit and if so that will give a good clue as to what is the cause of the problem. If the van is newer than '95 it has a 16-pin plug under the dash to the right of the steering column where you would plug in the reader. The codes are 4-digit numbers. It is called an OBD-II reader if you can find one near you. Get the code numbers, and if they know ask what is the name of the code, what they say needs to be done, and the cost. Then write back and tell me the code and what you were told and we can compare that with the shop manual. It may be possible to get the code using the ignition key: turn it "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less. Then watch the odometer window to see if the mileage reading is replaced by any other numbers. If the van is older than '96 then you need a different type of reader and you can't get transmission fault codes with your ignition key. It is called an OBD-I reader.
So lets get the codes and then we can see if it can be fixed locally.
