Chrysler Repair: 2001 Grand Cherokee headlights flash, sun is down, door locks

Question
QUESTION: Hi Kevin, Strange things are happening with my Jeep. The vehicle can be  parked with all components turned off,the doors locked and the red security light flashing and the headlights and parking lights will come for no apparent reason. They might or might not flash a couple of times but will stay on for a couple of minutes then shut off.I don't think the doors unlock when this happens. Yesterday just the parking lights came on dimly for a few minutes then shut off. I do most of the mechanical work on my vehicles but this issue has me baffled. What do you think? Thanks, Dave

ANSWER: do u have the lights set in auto mode?

QUESTION: Answer...Yes the headlight switch is in the AUTO position. Also I have selected in the overhead console to have the lights flash with the locks, headlights on with the wipers and a 30 second delay when turning off the vehicle. Hope this helps. Thanks, Dave
ANSWER: well then u would be looking at either the multi function switch or the little sensor on top of the dash with the red or black cover on it. That sensor senses the light outside and if it thinks the sun is down it will turn them on. With out the correct scan tool I can tell u with 100% if its the multi function switch or the sensor, Or bcm.

QUESTION: Do you suppose that if I were to put a piece of black tape over the light sensing eye to test that the headlights will come on and remove it for the lights to go out would eliminate it as a possibility? Do you have any suggestions, besides the dealer, where to get a multi-function light switch? What is the bcm? Thanks

Answer
u could put black tape over yes that would always want them to be on and see if ti still flickers. If they still flicker  then yeah I would go for a multi function switch. A BCM is the inside body computer handles lights  and door locks  and so on. I don't see bcm go bad like that but always a possibility.
If u live near the Atlanta area i would be happy to do this sorta repair on the side for less then a dealer would charge u. If u do this yourself don't go any where but a dealer for the part  because i have seen bad stuff happen from aftermarket switch like that installed. The BCM likes to see certain voltages from switches like that  and if they are not there  it does not know what to do.
