Chrysler Repair: 00 300M Hazards position blows fuse, not turns, fuse size, turn signals

Question
Replaced flasher and now the turn signals work but when I put on the hazards it blows the fuse under the hood and nothing works. Replace the fuse under the hood and the turn signals work again.

Answer
Hi Mark,
Check the fuse size: the one under the hood is supposed to be 20 amp. There is another fuse, #12 under the dash, that is supposed to be 10 amp but it is probably not the cause of the problem in any case. The only difference between the turn and the hazard is of course that instead of two filaments you have four filaments going at once. The switch itself can't be bad because all it does is ground a contact in the flasher. So all I can see is that possibly one of the four bulbs/sockets is shorted "slightly" or overdrawing for one reason or another and thus it will no blow the fuse alone (when only two are going) but add the other two and the fuse is then overdrawn. Take a look at the four bulbs when using the turns only and see if any looks brighter or dimmer. If that doesn't reveal anything, then if you don't want to invest in alot of fuses to try different combos of bulbs/positions then you might need to measure the current draw by each bulb's wire using an anmmeter. Very interesting situation...I haven't heard of that before but this is the only reason I can see for what is happening. Please report back.

PS Is there a separate indicator light on the switch or on the message center for when the hazards are in action, that you can recall or shown in the manual? That would be the other possibility, but I don't see one in the wiring diagram. If such a bulb were shorted, that could explain it.
