Chrysler Repair: Starts, then dies when engine is warm: 90 3.0L, chrysler lebaron, coolant temp

Question
I HAVE A 90 CHRYSLER LEBARON WITH A 3.0. IT JUST STARTED ACTING THIS WAY. WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT (NO PROBLEM WHEN COLD) AND TURNED OFF ON RESTART IS FIRES UP AND THEN DIES (NO IDLE) FOR A FEW MINUTES,THEN FINALLY RUNS FINE. THE FUEL PRESSURE IS FINE (NEW PUMP, FILTER AND RELAY - GAUGE HOOKED UP - RUN ALL FUEL TESTS) CHECKED THE COIL (PRIMARY AND SECONDARY ARE IN SPECS). WILL JUST CLEANING THE AIR INTAKE BODY DO IT! ANY SUGGESTIONS? THANKS

Answer
Hi Kerry,
Cleaning the throat of the throttle body is a good idea. I would also check to be sure that the resistance across the two wires (tan/black, black/light blue) of the coolant temp sensor located adjacent to the thermostat housing is in the range of 700 to 1,000 ohms when the coolant is at operating temperature. If not then it could cause a too rich mixture.
If the car was originally sold in California it will have an egr valve and you might check to be sure the stem of the valve moves freely by moving it up and down with the tip of a screwdrive. If not, lubricate the stem with WD-40.
Lastly, check for fault codes: using the ignition key go "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less. Then watch the check engine light which will remain 'on' to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to verify you have an accurate set of counts. Then group the counts in pair to form two digit fault codes. The last two flash sets will always be 5, so that is code 55 which means "end of readout". You can get a fault code list at www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html
