Chrysler Repair: fuel cap as a source of fault code, locking gas cap, gas tank

Question
My check engine light is on, and an engine check said I had a minor emissions leak. I had a locking gas cap, then switched it for a regular gas cap. Is it possible that I would need a factory gas cap, or would it make a difference?
Thanks,
-Michael

Answer
Hi Michael,
Was the code specific for a gas tank cap leak? or is that just one possibility? Do you know the fault code number?
If the cap is not sealing properly it will cause a code to be recognized. Why not ask the dealer/parts store if you can try a different one  with the understanding you can return it if it doesn't solve the code issue. If you can get the code number, ask a follow-up and tell me what it is.
