Chrysler Repair: Digital speedometer intermittent: 88 LeBaron, digital speedometer, wheel revolution

Question
I have a 1988 Chrysler LaBaron convertible. It has the 2.2 liter turbocharged motor. The digital speedometer very seldom works. I tried cleaning the connection on the distance sensor, but this did not help. I performed the instrument panel self check out in the Chrysler manual and the instrument panel passed the check. Any ideas that may help me repair the speedometer?

Answer
The distance sensor's signal goes directly to the instrument cluster pin 6 of the black plug, white/orange wire. If you monitor that wire for pulsing (eight times per each wheel revolution) by means of an ohmmeter to ground you should be able to determine if the sensor's signal is arriving at the cluster or not. If not, then the sensor or the connecting wire is flaky. If it is, then the cluster is the problem, and you might begin by checking the circuit board's connection to pin 6 for a possible cold solder joint. If that works out, then it would have to be an electronic problem of a component in the cluster proper.
Good luck on sorting this out.
