Chrysler Repair: 96 Cirrus 2.5l idle probs., obd ii, cat converter

Question
Hello, I have a 96 cirrus 2.5l v6.  Recently I have begun watching the RPM at stop signs, because sometimes it has died, or starts to die, so i put it in neutral to keep it running.  It has even died a few times while driving, and i would have to coast to safety.  When it died while i was driving, i watched the rpm drop to 0 for a few seconds, then it jumped back up.  It does not have a problem starting back up.  Another issue im having, is when i am cruising along and i take my foot off the gas, the rpms sometimes stay around 1500-1800 until i start braking.  I have just replaced the egr, cleaned the throttle body, and replaces the o2 sensor after the cat-converter.  Any ideas?  Spark plugs and wires were changed within the past 20,000 miles, this vehicle currently has 59,xxx.  Thank you for reading!

Answer
Hi Mike,
Have you checked for fault codes? Your car was the first year of OBD-II but I believe you can get the readout with your ignition key:"on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing this is 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch the check engine light that will remain "on" to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause. Then repeat to be sure the count is accurate. The last two sets of flashes will be 5 in each. Then group the numbers into pairs in the order of treadout to form 2-digit fault code numbers, the last number will always be 55 which means end of readout. Then let me know what the other numbers are or go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a translation. If that doesn't work then try an Autozone Parts store where they will often do a readout via the underdash plug for free. If not available, then an independent shop will do a readout for around $40.
Always ask for the number and what they say needs to be done.
It could be one of several sensors, but if you can get a code that would avoid random guessing.
