Chrysler Repair: 1998 Chrysler Town n Country Lxi, temperature gauge, chrysler town

Question
QUESTION: I am having a problem with my a/c. When it is cool out or when the car has been sitting over night, the air blows cold. During the afternoon when it is hot out, the air blow cold when I am sitting at a stop, but when I begin driving, the air blows warm (more like having a vent on rather than air). I also had a problem with the car wanting to overheat when I was stopped in traffic or at a stoplight with the air on. I made sure that I turned the air off and got off onto a road where I could keeping moving and the temperature gauge went right back down to normal. My husband checked the coolant last night and the container was empty so he filled it. He did not check the radiator though, so today a friend and I just checked it and it did not appear to be any where near filled as well as the container only contained about a third of what we put in last night. We filled it again and I will check after I drive it later. I just found my manual and found out that it should hold 13.23 qts and since I don't have any idea what it had in it before we started adding, it could possibly need quite a bit more as I have only added 4 qts. I will continue to check on that, but don't know if the problem with that and the a/c not being cool when I am moving have anything to do with each other or not. We did charge the a/c and when it works it blows ice cold so I know it is not the freon. Someone suggested perhaps it has something to do with the serpentine belt. Do you have any advice...I am not financially able to do any costly repairs, but I need to keep the van running to get to work, so I am trying to learn anything I can about the situation. I can go without the air if I have to, but I live in Florida and have quite a drive to work and would prefer to have it work if there is something reasonable someone thinks would fix it. I am also concerned about what might have happened with the radiator because I fear there is still some problem even if I don't run the air. Any ideas you have would be much appreciated. I hope I have explained this well enough and I apologize because I know next to nothing about cars.

ANSWER: give me the last 8 of your vin there is a recall out for the rad van relay and it could also be the cause of your ac inop. U can live with out ac the van wont run if it over heats.

QUESTION: Here are the last 8 of vin   WB639980
ANSWER: ok u don't have the fan relay recall on your van. See if the cooling fan even comes on with the ac or or wen the van starts to over heat  if u replace the fan relay withch is on the driver side frame rail.

QUESTION: Fixed the overheating problem. It was just very low on coolant for some reason. After filling has been fine for a couple of days even with idling for 20 minutes. It doesn't appear to have anything to do with the a/c as that problem was prior to overheating issue and is continuing after. The a/c though is still a mystery. In the morning, the a/c is cold, but once the car sits in the sun, it struggles to blow cold. After a lengthy drive, the a/c will start to blow cold when the car is stopped, but whenever I begin to drive, the a/c turns to warm, until I stop at a stoplight again and then it starts to feel cool. Could it be a result of the power needing to used by the engine when I am moving and when I am stopped it can focus on the air. What could be malfunctioning to cause this?  Any ideas?
ANSWER: ok if u added coolant  u ahve either a leak or the fans  are not working  u never did tell me if they work when u turn on the ac.  ANd  more then likely have a leak in the ac system and have low freon.Get the ac checked out because i cant help u unless u give me some pressures and how much freon is in there.

QUESTION: Sorry, I forgot to mention that the fans run when I turn on the a/c and we checked the freon several times and when the a/c is off the pressure is really high and when the a/c is on the pressure is right where the gauge indicates it should be. My husband was not sure where it should be when the a/c was off so he did not know if that was normal or not. I did have a problem a year ago and was told the evaporator needed replaced, but it would be 1400.00 to have that done, so we were just going without air. That time I never had cold air. It always blew warm no matter what I was doing. My neighbor who owns a body shop, helped us by putting a can of sealant in and then charged the freon. The air blew ice cold for a year. When it seemed to not be getting as cold as it should be or as quickly as it should, he charged the freon again for me in June ( a year later). We also added another can of sealant because the air was still not working as it should and we thought perhaps we needed to do that again since it worked before and like I said in the early morning hours when I go to work the air is ice cold. I run it on the lowest setting and am fine. Also after letting it run for about 20 minutes in park it gets ice cold, but as soon as I start driving the air feels warmer the further I drive, but if I stop at a light, it starts to cool down again. I understand that perhaps you can't diagnose this over the internet. I am just trying to see if anyone has any ideas as we can't spend a lot of money and it is frustrating that it can cool some of the time, but not at other times. Hope this additional information is helpful and I do appreciate you trying to help me. Thank you.

Answer
the pressure your husband is looking at the is low side, when off the high and low are equal around 100. When running the low side should be between 30 and 50 and high side 150 and 250. If u were told u need an evap  then that your prob the hole is bigger so the freon goes away faster and u are to where u have a low amount and the air is not cool ne more.
If u live in the atl area or close enough I would do that sorta side job for ya.
