Answer
Hi Michael,
The 96 model year was when OBD-II codes were adopted. So if you get a used mod from a wreck it has to be from that model year or maybe from '97; I wouldn't go too far astray from that. I would suggest that you check at a dealer's parts department to see if the part number of the module for your car is the same as the part number of the mod you are considering buying from a wreck. If they are, then just buy the used one and have if reprogrammed. Otherwise, I wouldn't buy a used one.
But I am not clear who told you it was the trans control module. Did they do a code readout and if so what was the code number? The 'drive in 2nd gear only' is actually a strategy that is built-in to the system such that when there is a malfunction in the trans that may cause futher damage it protects itself by changing into this 'limp-in mode' which is self-protective. It is possible that the module is indeed bad, but there are many other possible reasons for your trans to be in this limp-in mode. So if you don't have the actual number, it would be wise to get a readout to find out what it is. An Autozone Parts store will ofter do that for free or get it done at an independent shop for around $40 as a "special". Dealers charge around $80. If you get the number ask the name, what it means, and what the cost of repair will be. Then let me know if you would like me to verify that.
