Chrysler Repair: 99 T&C: trans output speed sensor replacement, vertical shift, output speed

Question
I had a output speed sensor replaced at 54K miles. I now have 98K and I am faced with the same circumstance. I am in limp mode with the service engine soon light on. The last time it was $136 labor and $20 for parts. I would gues if I have it done now it would cost @ $240. Is this something I could do on ramps in my garage?
Thanks,
Greg

Answer
Hi Greg,
I am not certain but I suspect that you may have reversed the parts vs. labor although $20 for labor seems like it is perhaps below the minimum charge. It is very easy to replace from what I see of the location. It is simply found on the side of the transmission that faces the front of the van, located just to driver's side of the vertical shift rod to which the shift cable from the interior shift lever is attached. You can't miss the vertical rod, and you will see the input speed sensor in front of the rod, and the output sensor behind the rod, both at mid-body height on the trans housing. All you do is remove the plug on the sensor (gently lift retaining tab), unscrew the old one, and screw in a new one. It is torqued to 20 foot-lbs, about the same as a spark plug.
Are you sure the problem is the output speed sensor; do you have a fault code that points to that being the cause of the limp-in mode?
So take a look and decide for yourself.
