Chrysler Repair: 2000 Sebring: oil light, check engine light; reset?, independent shop, oil light

Question
Could you kindly give me instructions on how to reset the oil light and the check engine light on my car.

Answer
Hi Linda,
The oil pressure light does not have a locked on feature, unless the sending unit has failed or the wire from the sender is shorted to a metal surface. If neither of those is true then if your light stays on at any engine rpm faster than idle it means that the oil pressure is too low for the safe operation of the engine. So if your light is staying on while you are in motion I would stop driving the car until you sort out exactly what is going on by measuring the oil pressure with a calibrated gauge inserted in place of the sending unit which is located near the oil filter. It has to be 6 pounds per square inch or more at idle, and 35-75 psi at 3,000 rpm.
The check engine light will stay on when the controller for the engine detects an operational fault that causes excess pollution. You can erase the memory of the controller by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, but if it comes on again then you have to take that as a real fault and get a readout of the memory to find out what the fault code is. You can get a free readout at an Autozone Parts store, or maybe for $40 at an independent shop. Find out the exact number, what it means, what they would do about it, and how much? Then write back and we can compare that to the manual. You might try turning the ignition key "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in an elapsed time of 5 seconds or less. Then watch the odometer window of speedometer to see whether the reading changes to show any four-digit codes. That may not work, but give it a try.
